The Orchideous charm causes flowers to bloom or grow. In the Goblet of Fire, Ollivander uses it to test Fleur’s wand during the triwizard tournament.

In our activity, we are going to make paper flowers bloom with water. We’ll fold our paper flowers and then place them in water. When the paper starts to absorb the water, the cellulose fibers in the paper start to expand. As the water soaks out to the folded petals (with capillary action), that expansion causes the paper to unfold and the flowers to bloom.

Here is what we’ll do.

  1. Gather supplies
    • Paper and scissors
    • Dish or bowl
    • Water
    • Coloring or decorating supplies (optional)
  2. Fill the glass dish water
  3. Cut out paper flowers and decorate, if desired. (Use our template below or draw your own.)
  4. Fold the petals in on the flower and place gently on the water in the dish
  5. Observe as the paper flowers unfold and “bloom”
